Table Talk: Sharing Food, Time, and Jesus with People
“If You Invite a Prophet to Dinner...” (Luke 11:37-54)
Jesus was invited by a Pharisee to eat in his home. This is the second of three stories Luke recounts of invitations Jesus accepts from a Pharisee (7:36; 14:1). This Pharisee was astounded by Jesus’ lax approach to the oral traditions (expectations) of ritual cleansing before a meal. But, if you invite a Prophet to dinner, shouldn’t you expect him to act like one?
Highlight Reel: Invitation to a meal- Banquet mode - Water Basin -
Triclinium - Oral tradition - Woe throw down - Banquet interuptus!
Jesus, what’s the big deal? What’s with the washing or not (11:37-38)?
Did the P. first ritually wash his hands? Then, watch Jesus not wash?
Did Jesus watch the P. wash, then consciously decide not to wash?
Bottom line: Jesus opposes hypocrisy! (esp. from religious leaders!)
Jesus accepts the invitation and refuses to fear the critics.
Jesus, what’s with the woes? And, what is a woe (11:42-52)?
Woe= prophetic rebuke, a word of judgement; passionate righteous
indignation; “a curse that warns against catastrophe” (D. Garland).
Jesus confronts the outwardly obsessed hypocrisy of the religious men.
Jesus goes full-blown prophet! He drops 6 woes (2 sets of 3):
1) condemns for obedience to minutiae (not the weightier matters)
2) condemns for focus on prestige/recognition (honor game)
3) condemns for outward focus when inside is dead
4) condemns for making the Law burdensome/impossible to follow
5) condemns hypocrisy of building monuments to honor prophets
but not honor their message from God.
6) condemns for creating obstacles to unlocking understanding of
who God is and what He expects (taken “key to knowledge”)
Jesus, what do you expect? What is vital to honor God (11:39-42)?
Jesus says... love God & love your neighbor (do justice, be generous)!
Jesus says it’s the heart, the inside which matters most! (11:39-41)
Jesus calls for the inside/out, both/and approach (11:42).

“More than a Picnic with Jesus” (Luke 9:10-17)
Picnics are a fun summer tradition- a unique way to enjoy an outside meal! Our text is found in all four Gospel accounts about the miracle feeding of the 5,000+. Jesus hosts an impromptu, mega, outdoor banquet! This meal further reveals Jesus’ identity to His followers, and leads us to answer the crucial question: “Who do you say Jesus is?”
Good times, grieving times ... when misery leads to ministry (Mt.14:13)
Good times: “the apostles” share stories of ministry and mission,
getting away to rest and recoup together (Lk.9:10; Mk.6:31-32).
Grieving times: Jesus is told of John’s beheading by Herod (Mt.14:13).
Ministry time ... when compassion > grief (Lk.9:11-17)
Jesus has compassion on the multitudes even in grief.
Jesus welcomes the crowd & shares w/ them about the kingdom.
Jesus provides healing ministry.
Jesus challenges the disciples faith (Jn.6:5-7) to do much with little.
Jesus blesses the little (Jn.6:8) and it becomes more than enough!
Revealing times ... when events enact the unveiling of truth (Lk.9:11ff)
Jesus is Host (v.11)- He welcomes the crowd; seats them, feeds them.
Teacher (v.11)- He teaches about the kingdom.
Healer (v.11)- He heals those in need of healing.
Prophet > Moses (vv.12-17; miraculous wilderness feeding!).
Messiah, sent from God (v.20, “You are the Christ of God.”).
Deciding time ... Who do you say Jesus is? (Lk.9:20)
Jesus is the manna from God, the living bread (Jn.6:35, 51; cf.v.14)!
Jesus is our provider!
Jesus is our hope!

“Snacks & Theology” (Luke 6:1-5)
Happy Father’s Day! We share some meals are around the table, but some are on the go! One day Jesus & the disciples were walking, got hungry, picked and ate grain-heads on the Sabbath. This led the Pharisee’s to question Jesus’ keeping of the Law. Jesus uses the occasion to share about who He is and what He is doing. Who knew a snack could pack such a theological punch?!
Some background on the Sabbath and why it matters (Ex.20:8-11):
The 4th commandment: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it
holy” (v.8).
What is the Sabbath? It is the 7th day, a day of rest for relationship and
reflection (vv.9-11).
How is the Sabbath kept holy? By not working on the Sabbath (v.10).
What does not working on the Sabbath look like in Jesus’ day? It
includes not harvesting grain according to the Pharisees (6:1-2).
Jesus reorients what it looks like to keep the heart of the Law (6:3-4).
Jesus recalls a heroic story of OT faith-life (David, 1 Sam.21:1-6).
Jesus’ rationale clarifies and justifies their actions on the Sabbath.
Jesus changes their picture of who Messiah is (6:5; cf. Dan.7:13-14)!
What does Jesus mean when He pronounces: “The Son of Man is Lord
of the Sabbath” (v.5)?
Jesus turns the conversation: Whoever is Lord runs the Sabbath!
Jesus’ focus is on relationship and mission.
Questions for 21st century consideration and application:
What should our relationship be with keeping the Sabbath holy?
Better question: What is your relationship with “Lord of the Sabbath”?
When you tell your story, do people see Jesus differently?
Can people tell the authority of Jesus holds sway over you?
Bottom line: Jesus is Lord! Your relationship with him matters most.

“Throw a Party- Tell Your Story” (Luke 5:27-32)
Responding to the call to follow Jesus transforms our lives. Luke tells us Matthew’s story as the recently resigned tax collector, who gathers his friends for a BBQ to meet Jesus, tell his story, and then the big bon-voyage to trek on with Jesus. Ever thought about throwing a bash and introducing your friends to Jesus through your faith story?
What was Matthew’s “whatever” hunger (v.27)? $$$$$!!!!!
Matthew was a hated traitor as a tax-collector working for the Romans.
Matthew was very wealthy, more so than all the other disciples.
Matthew was living the dream! (Perhaps near the Roman garrison
beachside @ Capernaum?)
Jesus’ call changes all (vv.27-28)! Jesus sees and speaks to Matthew.
“Follow Me!” (v.27) = “Come, be my disciple.” Jesus is decisive.
Decisive moment/move:“... got up, left everything, followed Him” (v.28).
The old dream dies and a new vision for life emerges!
Go ahead- throw a party and honor Jesus (v.29)!
For Matthew, Jesus had honored him by calling him to follow.
So, Matthew honors Jesus by throwing a mega BBQ Party!
There’s a story to be told about a decisive moment in time.
Ever thought about throwing a bash and telling your story?
Such a grand gesture can be both decisive and divisive.
Jesus shows us what grace at the table looks like (vv.30-32).
Grace shared over a meal invites people into relationship.
Expect questions and let Jesus speak. Change can be complicated!
The religious men questioned Jesus’ associations and methodology.
(The Pharisees don’t mind the party as much as they want to
control the guest list. -Tim Chester)
Jesus quickly settles the matter, using two common illustrations:
1) a physician heals the sick; and,
2) a host calls people to the meal (repentance- response 2 grace!).
Jesus practices acceptance around the table and calls for repentance!
Do you see your need for Jesus? Will you follow Him?

“Be Careful What You Feed Your Soul” (Luke 4:1-4)
Welcome to Summer! This summer we will be eating our way with Jesus through Luke’s Gospel. Hunger is a powerful motivator and tempter. Today, we explore when the Spirit led Jesus to the wilderness to fast, pray, and be tempted by the devil. This encounter is an early reference to food (“bread”) in Luke’s gospel. Aligning our soul hunger with Jesus’ teaching, will prepare us for the spiritual meals ahead this summer.
Resist feeding your “whatever” hunger (4:3)-
*It is no surprise that the enemy first attacks at the desire for
satisfaction of hunger by means of questioning Jesus’ true identity.
*The enemy of your soul will cause you to doubt your true identity.
*The tempter will lead you to believe you deserve whatever you can
give yourself to alleviate your “whatever” hunger.
*You are being deceived by pursuing everything you think you want that
you believe will fulfill your needs.
*Who do you trust to provide your daily bread? (Lk.11:1)
Hunger for something greater (4:4; Dt. 8:3; cf. Jn.4:31-38)-
*Jesus has found something which satiates a greater hunger: for truth,
fellowship, and purpose.
*Like Jesus, hunger for something more! Jesus is God’s Son! Trust Him.
*Jesus quotes from the Law (Dt.8:3) and has a food (Jn.4:31-38) that
sustains Himself through the trial:
God’s Word-
God’s will (Kingdom)-
God’s work (mission)-
Be careful what you feed your soul (4:4; Mt. 4:4, 11)-
*Pursuing “whatever” hunger will keep you from gospel conversations.
*Feeding “whatever” hunger will keep you from hospitality opportunities.
*Desire what truly satisfies the soul: a relationship with the Father (truth
of the Word, fellowship with others doing his will and work)!
*Jesus is God’s Son! Trust Him to provide for what your soul needs.
*Are you hungry to obey and serve the Lord more than other things?

Jesus and the Sisterhood of Faith- “Remember Mercy” (Luke 13:10-17)
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! This is the fifth and final unique story recorded in Luke’s gospel of Jesus blessing a woman. In a Sabbath day service, Jesus heals an unnamed woman crippled by an evil spirit for 18 years. Jesus sets her free! Jesus helps us remember that Mercy is greater! Helping people be set free by Jesus is a ministry priority. We all need His mercy! Chose mercy over judgement when it’s in your power to do so.
Observing Jesus in the Story
Jesus participates in worship (v.10). (He’s mindful of His merciful Father.)
Jesus practices mercy (vv.11-13). (He acts to free a woman.)
Jesus advocates for mercy (vv.15-16). (He speaks for the weak.)
4 Reactions in this Healing Story
1.) Indignation (v.14)- the synagogue ruler was indignant. He mistakenly
valued people less than the rules he enforced for keeping the Sabbath.
He advocates scheduling another day for healing, but not the Sabbath.
He has forgotten mercy!
2.) Justice (vv.15-16)- Jesus confronts the merciless ruler as a hypocrite!
Jesus grants the woman mercy, but the ruler gets justice!
Jesus argues folks treat their animals good on the Sabbath, so why not
this daughter of Abraham? Especially, since Satan bound her for 18yrs!
Today is a day to be set free by Jesus! A day for mercy, not judgement.
3.) Humiliation (v.17)- the ruler/others were rightly humiliated.
They experienced shame for dishonoring this woman.
The Truth both confronts and sets free! (convicts/releases)
4.) Delight (v.17)- the people rejoiced! The woman praises God (v.13)!
They were delighted with who Jesus is and what He does!
Does the goodness of Jesus to others delight you?
Remember: mercy triumphs over judgement!
