I) The Church is the House Built on the Faithful Foundation (vv. 1-6a

II) The Church is the House which has a Confidence and a Boast (v. 6b)

III) The Church is the House Called to Guard their Worship of a Holy God (vv. 7-11)

Spiritual Principle: The Church is the Lord’s Household built on the foundation of Christ, the Faithful Son of God.

Application:

1. Jesus is the reason and the means by which we continue in the community of faith.
2. Hold fast to the hope you have in Him but also continue to press on to maturity.
3. Guard your personal fellowship with God but also regularly gather with your church for Christ-centered worship.

I) Even in Our Weak State, God Cares For and Greatly Values Us (vv. 5-8)

II) In the Incarnation, Jesus Suffered but not without Purpose (vv. 9)

III) Jesus’s Suffering was Necessary and Provides Help for Us (vv. 10-18)

Spiritual Principle: Through the Incarnation, Jesus became our merciful and faithful High Priest. Jesus suffered in order to free us from the power and fear of death, the ultimate suffering of our soul.

Application:

1. God notices your suffering.
2. Your suffering is only temporary not permanent.
3. Do not suffer alone, especially when facing the suffering that comes through temptation.
4. Look to Jesus when you suffer, the One who Himself suffered and will come to your aid as your sympathetic High Priest.

     D) The Reward We Gain (vv. 20-30)

 

II) The Spiritual Point

A true servant, or simply a disciple, is one who willingly, joyfully, and with anticipation orders his or her life to expand the Lord's kingdom. 

 

III) The Kingdom Principle

There are two great questions of application for us to ask:

     1) Are we as individuals ordering our lives and resources to serve the King now?

     2) Are we as a church ordering our plans and actions to usher in the Kingdom now?

 

Jesus is not teaching to whom much is given much is required. He is teaching to whom anything is given something is required!

I) The Promise of the Reigning King . . . His Intent (vv. 20-22)

II) The Person of the Reigning King . . . His Identity (v. 23)

Spiritual Principle: God has inaugurated His promise to reign over, deliver salvation to, and show His glory among all peoples through Christ our King. If this is true: I believe we can make two definitive applications: 

1) You as an individual who are in Christ can never sin to the point where God’s promises to you in Christ are nullified. Therefore, find peace in your promised salvation. 

2) As a church, we can never mess up to the point where His plans to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth are thwarted. Therefore, find confidence in sharing this salvation with and serving others.

I) The Problem: Settled in a Secular Society (vv. 1-4)

II) The Prescription: Seek the Lord’s Shalom (vv. 5-9)

III) The Promise: Secure in the Savior’s Certainty (vv. 10-11)

App: As believers . . .

1. It’s ok to be proud of and care about where you are from.
2. We are commanded to seek the Lord’s peace and goodness for where we live.
3. The reason why is because the Lord is not bound by geography.
4. The primary way we seek the Lord’s peace and goodness for where we live is the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
